On Thursday 25, Friday 26 and Saturday 27 the high tide arrives: day parties from 2 pm and the biggest nights of the summer. Request your table early: those three nights fill up first.

The history

Holy Week in San Juan del Sur: tradition and beach

Holy Week is when Nicaragua remembers, in the Christian tradition, the last days of Jesus. It is one of the most important weeks of the calendar: Thursday and Friday are national holidays and, for many families, it turns into a long break.

Over the years it has also become the big beach week. Families and groups of friends head for the coast, and San Juan del Sur, in Rivas, is one of the destinations that receives the most people: that is the veraneo, the summer holiday, with sea, sunsets and long days on the bay.

At the table it is the season for fish, sopa de queso (cheese soup) and almíbar (fruit in syrup), dishes of the week eaten at home and in restaurants. Marea Alta adds something of its own to that tradition: nine summer nights on the bay.
